The MG Midget, right, was mechanically identical to the Austin-Healey Sprite. It had the traditional MG grille and a different trim. The ‘frog eye’ Sprite was never badged as an MG, so the MG Midget was always one mark number behind the corresponding Austin-Healey Sprite. 50s Retro cars

Car ownership, alongside television, meant that for most people the fifties were very different from previous decades. More people now had the freedom to go where they wanted, when they wanted and there was nothing third class about motoring.

At first they had to make do with pre-war cars, as rationing and the drive for exports restricted the home market. Once rationing was finally over there was a boom in car ownership. In 1953 America got its first American made sports car and since then there was no looking back. Since then Chevrolet has released almost six different generations of Corvettes. The latest is the C6, which costs around $100,000 and is in production. The performance of corvette has improved through generations. This is the car America drives.

C1 or the first generation Corvette was in production during the years 1953 to 1962. Then in the year 1962 the car was replaced by C2. This car is remarkable in the automobile history as this featured the Corvette Sting Ray coupe. Larry Shinoda and Lawrence Kiyoshi Shinoda were the designers of the car. The concept of stylization was done entirely by Bill Mitchell. Classic corvettes like Mako Shark or the Sting Ray soon became very popular. The Italians may have perfected the mid-engine super car, but it was British racing innovation that got us there.  The 1959 Formula One championship  marked the first time a mid-engine race car had ever claimed the ultimate victory.  Jack Brabham made racing history behind the wheel of a mid-engine Cooper T-51 race car, and the course of car design was forever altered, as mid-engined race cars began to dominate on the world’s racing circuits.
